On July 12, 1835, the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Sterling was organized -- the first church in what is now Brown County,
Illinois. In 1836, the first building was built near where the present fellowship hall stands. This building also
was used as Brown County's first court house. In 1856, the present building was built. This church became the mother
church for four other Presbyterian churches in Brown County, including the Hersman church built in 1875. In 1980,
the Mt. Sterling and Hersman churches re-united as the Presbyterian Church of Christ, keeping the Mt. Sterling church and
the Hersman manse (which has since been sold). The Mt. Sterling building was renovated by removing the steeple (this is now
on the east side of the church), replacing the roof and removing the false fronts, and redocorating the interior. The furnishings
of both churches were used.
